Public welfare is poorly managed, and it shows in everyday life. Public toilets, even in major hubs like the airport, are often filthy and reek of neglect. It’s a small thing on the surface, but it speaks volumes about the lack of investment in basic public services.
The streets are another disappointment—littered and poorly maintained, with trash accumulating along roadsides and in public spaces. One particularly frustrating example is the 25 de Abril Bridge. Almost every day there’s a car accident, causing massive traffic jams that can bring the city to a standstill. It’s hard not to feel that infrastructure and public cleanliness are simply not a priority here. Portugal has so much potential, but these everyday issues leave a lasting impression that can’t be ignored.
